TAJ MAHAL

Composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and GRAMMY® winner Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music.  Though his career began more than four decades ago with American blues, Taj has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world, including West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Hawaiian Islands.

COREY HARRIS

Composer, singer and guitarist Corey Harris began his career in the early nineties, playing acoustic blues on the streets of New Orleans. Today he is recognized as one of the most innovative blues players of his generation.  With one foot firmly planted in the blues, Harris has consistently celebrated its connections to gospel, early jazz, reggae and West African music through collaborations with artists such as the late Malian guitar master Ali Farka Toure. He is a recipient of the 2007 MacArthur “Genius” Grant.

SHEMEKIA COPELAND

The proud daughter of legendary Texas bluesman Johnny Clyde Copeland, Shemekia blends a progressive city soul with a deep understanding of down-home themes. Shemekia is a passionate songstress without parallel in the genre today – a queen of the blues who delivers with an unbridled vitality that brings audiences to their feet. A two-time GRAMMY® nominee, she is at the very forefront of the present-day blues scene.

GUY DAVIS

Guy Davis is part soulful troubadour, part showman, and all blues. A singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player who is always ready to put everything he has into his performances, Guy has storytelling in his blood. He is considered an international “Ambassador of the Blues” due to his musical voyages to places such as Greenland, the Galapagos Islands, Indonesia, South America and all of Europe. With influences ranging from Skip James to Garrison Keillor, Guy breathes new life into old-time traditions – broadening smiles and filling hearts the whole world wide.

ALVIN YOUNGBLOOD HART

Alvin Youngblood Hart recognized at a very early age that the circle of music is boundless. And, over the subsequent four decades, he has built a legacy that transcends musical genres.  Though his first explorations were into the world of roots blues, Hart has cultivated a bold rock-and-roll side to his music – something that shines through even when he plays an old Leadbelly standard. Always moving forward, always testing boundaries, Alvin is an artist who, like the blues, refuses to be boxed in.

PHIL WIGGINS

Phil Wiggins is a talented songwriter and one of the greatest harmonica players this country has ever seen. Hailing from Washington, DC, Phil represented one half of the beloved Piedmont blues duo Cephas and Wiggins for thirty years. In 2009, however, his dear friend John Cephas passed, and now Phil honorably carries the torch on his own.  Radiating warmth and a love for life, he demonstrates a pure dedication to his craft and a firm belief that this music – blues music – changes lives.
