Chet Baker: “Cool jazz is much more subtle, it has to be listened to very carefully, and you have to know, you have to be able to compare it against something else that you know.”

Eliane Elias singing “I Thought About You”

Eliane: ““I Thought About You” was inspired by Chet Baker and in that sense it is a tribute to Chet, it was a natural fit for me to play, to sing music inspired by Chet because I am an instrumentalist and a singer, as Chet was.”

Chris Dunn: “Stylistically they share a similar approach in the way that they make music. There is a certain amount of vulnerability and intimacy, if you will, the way that they create and a mood that they set.”

Eliane: “Chet was a romantic, and so am I. And the songs that I chose talk about love, they all talk about love. About different aspects of love, others talk about longing, talk about the loss of love. I chose 14 songs that he played or recorded at one time or another in his career, songs that I feel that are good vehicles for playing, also for improvising, for singing. I decided to do them in two different ways, half with drums, half of the record without drums. Chet had this quote that he said, “It takes a great drummer to be better than no drummer at all.” So you can bet that the two drummers I have on the record are great.”

Eliane Elias singing “That Old Feeling”

Eliane: “The Bossa Nova was influenced by the “Cool Jazz” movement and Chet Baker was one of the great stars. João Gilberto amongst others was quite inspired by Chet. And you can hear that on the way of João Gilberto singing that is understated in that he sings over the bar line the way Chet played and sang. And I felt importance of including some of the tunes to reflect that influence.

The song, “There Will Never be Another You,” was a fun song to produce and to record. It goes back and forth between Brazilian rhythm section and the jazz, you know, you can hear that we, you know, keep the same tempo but we change grooves between, you know, every few bars. And it came out nice, it was fun to do. And that features pretty much everybody who’s on the record. So you have Marc Johnson on bass, you have Steve Cardenas on the electric guitar, Oscar Castro-Neves on the acoustic guitar, Marivaldo Dos Santos on percussion, Rafael Barata on drums, Victor Lewis on drums, and Randy Brecker on trumpet, and myself on vocals and on piano.”

Eliane: “The production that I share with Marc Johnson and Steve Rodby is a great team, and my colleagues of many years and we have produced many albums together. So, I was happy to be reunited on this one again.

There is something interesting, that Marc Johnson played with Chet Baker, and so did Victor Lewis, but at different times. But Marc and Victor together were the rhythm section with Stan Getz who is another star of the “Cool Jazz” movement. So it’s really a great team of musicians.

Chet had such a fluid way to, you know, to play through changes. He was so melodic, so lyrical. And it was really fun to put all of this material together.”

Video of Chet Baker Interview

Interviewer: “The word that comes to my mind when I listen to your music is lyricism. Can you agree to that?”

Chet Baker: “Can I what?”

Interviewer: “Agree to that?”

Chet Baker: “Definitely, that’s the only thing that I know. If it’s not, if it doesn’t have some lyrical meaning to it then I’m not interested in it.”
